Flashdance
Released in 1983, Flashdance was one of the most successful films of the 1980s. Centred around the disco era its soundtrack spawned several hit songs, among them “Maniac” and “What a Feeling”. Eighteen year-old Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) works as a welder at a steel mill during the day and as an exotic dancer in Mawby’s Bar at night. She lives on her own in a converted warehouse with her pit bull, Grunt. Her dream is to obtain a place at a prestigious dance school, the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory. During one of her performances at Mawby's she attracts the attention of Nick Hurley, the boss of the steel mill. Upon learning that Alex is one of his employees, Nick helps Alex to secure an audition at the Conservatory.
Footloose
Kevin Bacon stars as Ren McCormack, a teenager raised in Chicago who moves to a small Western town where dancing and rock music has been banned. For Ren and his classmates to have a senior prom they must figure out a way to get around the law, and Reverend Shaw Moore, who makes it his mission in life to keep the town free from dancing and rock music. The streetwise Ren leads his classmates to fight against the ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople. Fast-paced drama is filled with such now-famous hit songs as the title track and "Let's Hear It for the Boy."
Top Gun
Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is a young Naval aviator who aspires to be a top fighter pilot in the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (“Top Gun”) with his co-pilot and best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Maverick is cocky, undisciplined, flies by instinct and breaks all of the rules but has to fight against the legacy left by his father’s death in combat in order to be the best of the best. Top Gun broke all box office records and was the biggest grossing movie of 1986. It has been described as “a Generation X classic”.
Grease
As a new school year begins, wholesome Australian exchange student Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and duck-tailed, leather-jacketed Danny (John Travolta) continue their summertime romance into an on-and-off attraction that may or may not cross clique lines. The T-Birds and Pink Ladies Sandy the gum-chewin', tough-talkin' clique known as the Pink Ladies. Originally released in 1978, Grease is a fabulous tribute to the 1950s and one of the most beloved musicals of all time.
Saturday Night Fever
Nineteen-year-old Brooklyn native Tony Manero (John Travolta) lives for Saturday nights at the local disco, where he's king of the club thanks to his stylish moves on the dance floor. But outside of the club, things don't look so rosy. At home, Tony fights constantly with his father and has to compete with his family's starry-eyed view of his older brother. This portrait of young Brooklyn natives struggling to escape their sheltered lives for freedom and adventure in the big city of Manhattan defined a generation of disco dancers and 1970s youths.
Pretty in Pink
One of the leading coming-of-age “Brat Pack” movies of the 1980s, Pretty in Pink is about teenage love and social cliques in 1980s American high schools. Molly Ringwald stars as Andie Walsh, a poor but fashion-conscious New Wave girl who usually hangs out with her insecure best friend Duckie. Duckie has always had a crush on her, but now she has met a new guy from school, Blane. He's the wealthy campus heart-throb and she's the bright girl from the wrong side of town. As their romance builds, they struggle against mounting pressure from their respective social circles to end their relationship.
